長閑なる折こそなけれ花を思ふ心のうちに風はふかねど

nodoka naru ori koso nakere hana wo omou
kokoro no uchi ni kaze wa fukanedo

Composed on the heart being troubled in the time of flowering [of the cherry trees]:

"There is not even a moment of calmness...
In the heart that loves the blossoms,
the wind is already blowing..."

Izumi Shikibu, Shokugo-shuui-wakashuu, 93.

Literally: "There is not even a moment of calmness so that the wind is not blowing in the heart that thinks of the blossoms..." That is, when you really like the cherry blossoms, your happiness is already ruined by anticipating the wind that will scatter them.

Translation by Zoltan Barczikay.
